Foreword

It was a winter's day in an IBM® conference room in Philadelphia when I first met Dr. Eli Goldratt, the creator of the Theory of Constraints (TOC). I was meeting with Eli to discuss a substantial business dilemma we were facing in our Integration Services business at the time. In the aftermath of 9/11 and the burst of the dot-com bubble, the growth of our Integration Services business had slowed. We were working to address a rapid decline in our growth rate and the resulting pressures it was creating on our profitability. The challenge was that our traditional tactics for addressing such a situation weren't adequate to address the impact on our financial results. We needed some fresh thinking.
