You would typically run your server from a mains powered USB adapter. The Raspberry Pi is very small, and unlike full desktop PCs, it can run from batteries for an extended period of time if the battery setup has been done properly.

You may find the need to run the Raspberry Pi using batteries for remote controlled applications, for example, weather stations in remote areas, a remote controlled car, and similar situations.
