7.7. RETIMERS AND REPEATERS
The Serial physical layer allows 'retimers' and 'repeaters.' Retimers amplify a weakened signal, but do not transfer jitter to the next segment. Repeaters also amplify a weakened signal, but transfer jitter to the next segment. Retimers allow greater distances between end points at the cost of additional latency. Repeaters support less distance between end points than retimers, and only add a small amount of latency.
