One of our early nonbusiness applications of a web-based measurement system was for the U.S. Navy. Admiral Vern Clark, whom you’ve met in earlier chapters, understood the principles of alignment from our first book but was frustrated by his inability to measure the misalignment he knew was lurking in the vast enterprise he commanded. “Of the five major goals I have for the Navy,” he told us, “alignment is the only one I can’t measure.” Having beta tested a web-based alignment measurement system at FedEx, we explained how we could provide the measurements the Navy needed, and the admiral told us in effect, “Full steam ahead.”
