Neural circuits and in vivo monitoring using diamond

K. Fox and S. Prawer,    University of Melbourne, Australia

Abstract:

This chapter discusses the growing trend towards using diamond for biosensing, electrical stimulation and biological interfacing. Diamond has been proven to be an excellent material at the cell–material interface owing to its excellent chemical and biological stability. The chapter reviews the different applications of diamond depending on its surface chemistry, termination preferences and electrical conductivity. In particular, this chapter focuses on biosensing, preferential neural-network development, and the neural-stimulation and recording applications of diamond.
