1 It is worth pointing out, though, that many corpus-linguistic findings and the more theoretical interpretation of what these findings reveal about human linguistic knowledge and processing are so compatible with positions held in contemporary usage-based linguistics, cognitive linguistics, and construction grammar that these may be considered as the most useful theoretical background against which to interpret corpus-linguistic findings of all sorts. In fact, the compatibility is so large that it is in fact surprising that there is so little cooperation between the two fields; cf. Leech (1992), Schönefeld (1999), Schmid (2000), or Gries (2008b) for more detailed discussion.
