Introduction

This chapter describes emotional intelligence (EI), focusing on the scientific concept as distinct from the usage that appears in the popular press. EI is the ability to accurately and adaptively perceive, use, understand and manage emotions. People differ in this ability, and the ability can be measured through performance-based tests.
