Deep Integration of Applications

Portals offer the opportunity to integrate applications in a number of ways. In Chapter 2 we discussed the basic three-tier architecture of portals: the presentation layer, the application server layer, and the data services layer. The presentation layer, by default, integrates multiple applications with links to a variety of programs and services. The applications themselves do not share data and are integrated only in the sense that they are available from a single point. This is shallow integration. Deep integration, on the other hand, occurs at the application server or data services layers.
