Chapter Nine. Five Common Themes in Proven Portals

Throughout this book we have examined design principles in both theory and practice. In this chapter, we describe in detail five themes common to successful portal implementations:

  1. Focus on business processes

  2. Emphasis on ease of use

  3. Deep integration of applications

  4. Scalability of services

  5. Well-developed security models

These five themes appear to varying degrees in proven portals. Customer-facing portals stress all these themes while KM portals require more emphasis on ease of use and integration than on a particular business process. These five themes will play a role in your own well-designed portal.
