Metadata: Know What It's All About

Metadata is a popular yet complex topic in the IT realm. Metadata Solutions by Adrienne Tannenbaum [2002] provides an in-depth discussion of the topic, especially in relation to structured data applications. For our purposes, however, we will examine a narrow range of the metadata topics and focus primarily on describing the content and services available within an enterprise portal. The driving reason to adopt a metadata strategy is to improve users' access to information and services they need to get their jobs done—and that means we need metadata about both content and applications.
