Search Functions: The First Step

Search functions are common in unstructured data management systems. Web sites are routinely indexed using tools like Google (http://www.google.com) and ht://Dig (http://www.htdig.org) document management and e-mail systems provide search tools, and even relational databases are providing extensions to the relational engine to provide basic search services for unstructured content. This prevalence of search tools in different applications indicates one of the current problems with unstructured data: It is distributed across multiple platforms, often without a central point of access.
