In this chapter we examine the implementation options for the application server and enterprise information services tiers introduced in Chapter 2. First, we discuss the two application development standards that have emerged as the de facto frameworks for developing Web-based applications: Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) and Microsoft .NET.
