The logical architecture of successful portals consists of three tiers:

  1. Presentation layer

  2. Application server

  3. Enterprise information services

The presentation tier is responsible for rendering content for users and supporting other elements of the user interface. The application server tier is the workhorse of portal applications. It responds to activity in the user interface as well as accesses the data tier to implement the business logic required by portal systems. The enterprise information services tier acts as logical data repositories for portals although these systems themselves can be even more complex than the rest of the portal application.
