Tier 3: The Enterprise Information Services Layer

The third tier in our logical architecture is the enterprise information services or data services layer. This layer of the architecture is the most varied and the one about which we can say the least. It is here where portals and other Web-based applications meet the rest of an organization's information infrastructure. Some of the systems found in this tier include the following:

  • Relational databases

  • ERP systems

  • CRM systems

  • Sales force automation systems

  • Document management systems

  • E-mail systems

  • Legacy applications
