The Copyright Application

Completing the copyright application form is quite simple. The forms are accompanied by clear, detailed instructions, and examples of permissible wording often are included in the instructions. Generally, the following elements are required:

  • Title of the work. Every work submitted for copyright registration must be given a title to identify it. Although it is easy to identify the title of a book, song, or movie, it is sometimes harder to identify the title of a work of the visual arts. It is acceptable to say ''charcoal etching'' or ''jewelry design.'' If the work was known by previous or alternative titles, these should be given as well.

  • Author. The full name of the author (or authors, if the work is a joint work) ...
