Risk Management Case Study: Project Curiosity

IT WAS A DILEMMA TO ME WHETHER a practical case study on major applications of project risk management should be included in this book. The major argument not to include was that project team members and decision makers will not do such exercises on their own, usually being led by project risk managers. A major argument to include was supported by my previous experience. There was a high interest on the part of many project team members and decision makers I worked with in understanding risk management via practical examples. After all, no one appreciates driving courses based solely on theory, important as theory is, without the opportunity of actually driving.

After I had decided to include a case study, the next challenge was to select a type of a project for this. As I had worked on a variety of capital mega-projects, making the choice was pretty difficult. The final decision was encouraged by my former co-worker, Dr. Bill Gunter, who kindly agreed to write the foreword to this book. Being a top world specialist in carbon capture and storage (CCS) and greenhouse gases (GHG) projects and initiatives, he expressed an interest in finding a topic that is close to his professional activities. How could I ignore the wish of my first reader?
