The Project Management Professional or PMP® exam is based on the processes within the domains of project management known as: Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, Closing, and Professional and Social Responsibility. It is a four-hour, 200 multiple-choice question, computer-based exam (in the U.S.) that is intended to test a candidate's knowledge of project management and the ability of the candidate to apply that knowledge in many different situations and scenarios. Candidates for the exam must apply to the Project Management Institute® and complete a detailed and rigorous application process. Applicants with a high school diploma must have 7,500 hours in a position of responsibility leading and directing specific tasks, 60 months of project management experience, and 35 hours of formal project management education.

Applicants who hold a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent) are required to have 4,500 hours leading and directing specific tasks and 36 months of project management experience.
