8.2 Programmes and projects
A programme is a collection or group of related projects. Historically, IT projects were often treated as individual and separate undertakings with their own distinct aims and objectives. It became apparent that this was a flawed approach and that there were many advantages to be gained by grouping projects together into a programme. These include the following:
Reduction of duplication — two projects may be developing the same or a similar product.
Co-ordination of resources — projects inevitably place demands on an organization’s resources and it is far better to coordinate than compete for them.
