5.10 ISO 9001:2000

ISO 9001:2000 is the international standard for quality management. It is part of the ISO 9000 series and is specifically aimed at producers and suppliers of products and services, not necessarily software. ISO 9000 defines the terms used while ISO 9004 applies to the improvement processes.

It should be noted that ISO 9001 states that quality should be specified, but it does not say what quality is. For example when producing a ball point pen it could be stated that a quality requirement is for the ink in the pen to last three years, but equally it could state three days.
