5.9 Evaluating suppliers

It is very common these days for systems to be developed by third parties. It is therefore important to be able to establish if those third party suppliers have the necessary quality procedures in place to ensure that the software to be supplied is up to the standard expected.

To do this one has to investigate the supplier, ask some searching questions, examine documentation and perhaps undertake some auditing of their processes. The types of questions to be asked include the following.

  • Do they operate to ISO 9001 (the international standard for quality management systems)?

  • How are their projects organized? (For example, do they follow PRINCE 2, the standard for project management procedures sponsored by the UK government?) ...
