5.2 Definitions of quality

A dictionary definition of quality is ‘a degree or level of excellence’ as in the phrase ‘high-quality goods’. This is relevant to projects as it is hoped that all products are of a high quality. But the definition is subjective: for example, when comparing cars, people would disagree between the quality of different makes. Another definition is ‘conformance to standard’. Again this has an application to projects as within the project process there will be certain standards to which those developing the system ought to conform.
