Appendix A. Software Engineering Institute

Introduction

In 1984, the U.S. Department of Defense set up funding for a software research and development center known as the Software Engineering Institute (SEI). A competitive bid contract was issued in December of that year and, after evaluation, was awarded to Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania. Since then, technical and administrative professionals from industry, government, and academia have staffed it, providing products and services to industry and commerce, as well as to government.
