The open source language Perl has become one of the most popular languages in the world, widely used as a scripting language in Web applications. Microsoft .NET is a new framework in the Windows environment that allows multiple languages to compile down to the Common Language Runtime (CLR) and to make use of the vast array of functionality provided by the .NET Framework class library.
