Like the field of AI, robotics has had its share of disappointments and failed predictions. This was partly due to limitations of the hardware, but it also is due to the complexity of the software needed.
This chapter highlights potential applications for the field of robotics. These areas include smart appliances, caring for the elderly, performing dangerous or dull jobs, performing exploratory jobs, and providing specialized assistance, companionship, or entertainment.
AI techniques such as genetic algorithms, machine learning, or neural networks can be used within robotics applications to make the robots more useful and able to react quickly to their environments.
