ASP.NET MVC works and thrives on top of the classic ASP.NET infrastructure. Typically, the infrastructure of ASP.NET includes a few built-in HTTP handlers and HTTP modules, such as those for authentication, output caching, session state, and a bunch of container or service classes such as HttpContext and HttpRuntime. To a large extent, ASP.NET MVC can be considered as a specialization of the classic ASP.NET runtime environment that just supports a different application and programming model.
