O’Reilly Media has published a number of books that play well with this one. Any of the following make good companions while learning how to wrangle the Internet mail system:

  • sendmail, by Bryan Costales with Eric Allman, is a very complete, dense reference to the world’s most robust and time-tested mail transfer agent.

  • DNS and BIND, by Paul Albitz and Cricket Liu, describes the Internet’s Domain Name System. A knowledge of DNS is helpful when troubleshooting mail-related problems.

  • Essential Systems Administration, by AEleen Frisch, is a superb reference for Unix systems administrators. As with DNS, a working knowledge of Unix (and hence network) systems administration can save your sanity.

As for programming languages, I prefer Perl and Java. These two books rarely leave my desk: Programming Perl, by Larry Wall, Tom Christiansen, and Randal L. Schwartz, and Java in a Nutshell, by David Flanagan. O’Reilly has published many other books relating to both languages, but these are my favorites.
