Italic is used for:

  • Mailbox format headers

  • Protocol commands

  • Parameters to message headers

  • Parameters to mailcap format commands

  • Filenames and directory pathnames

  • Names of syntactic constructs and lexical structures in the Java language

Bold is used for:

  • Email message headers

  • Program invocation commands

  • Mailbox format separator names

Constant width is used for:

  • Java class names, interface names, variable names, and method names

  • Computer output in examples and text
