Each module is a piece of freely contributed software. If you don’t like one of them, then you are free to write a better one yourself and contribute it, or attempt to get the original author to see the error of his ways and apply your patch.

Since this is the case, the modules on CPAN tend to change with time. Several of those listed here are mature, even aging (such as POP3Client). Others have recently been announced, and their authors are actively looking for people to help complete them (such as Mail-Folder). In any case, the documentation (either POD or READMEs or both) that accompanies modules can be relied upon to give the state of the software. If a module’s doc says something like “WARNING: This is ALPHA code. The interface may change. You have been warned!”, then one might take note.

Any module with a version number less than 1.0 is probably suspect, though still possibly useful.
