Summary

This chapter focused on the holy grail of the Excel Services architecture, the Excel calculation engine. The calculation engine powers Excel Services and exposes myriad functionality to calling applications, including local spreadsheets and remote SOAP clients. The exposure is neatly tucked in under a security umbrella that protects intellectual property, including proprietary formulas and data that might be contained within spreadsheets.

The calculation engine also allows calling code to harvest data based on protected information without exposing the details of the protected information.
