Chapter 1. Web Development in 2008

ASP.NET is at the heart of Microsoft’s web development strategy. Version 2.0 was released in 2005 as part of .NET 2.0, and it delivered everything Microsoft had promised to drooling developers: less code to write, enhanced security and personalization features, new and overhauled controls across the board, web services, mobile support, and more. Visual Studio 2005 (VS2005) was released at the same time with a built-in web server for use locally and has proved to be an excellent, robust tool for ASP.NET development.

In the three years since that initial release, ASP.NET 2.0 hasn’t changed much. On the other hand, what surrounds ASP.NET to give both web developer and web user a richer experience has changed a lot.
