Cell-based therapies and tissue engineering strategies offer new approaches for repair of degenerate/damaged articular cartilage. This chapter provides a brief overview of the clinical need for cartilage repair, the current clinical treatment options and their limitations, and then discusses the chondrogenic potential of different cell sources including embryonic stem cells, stem cells derived from prenatal tissues and adult mesenchymal stem cells.
