Abstract:

Human mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) can be readily expanded from a small amount of bone marrow aspirate, and are currently being used in clinical trials for treating many diseases. Although MSC possess prominent multi-lineage differentiation potential, this stem cell feature appears to contribute little to the observed therapeutic benefits. Instead, the ability of MSC to produce a broad spectrum of growth factors and cytokines plays a critical role in the revitalization and healing of host tissue.
