7PERFORMANCE REVIEWS:Change ’Em or Chuck ’Em

We’re not sure who dreads performance reviews more: the manager, the employee, or HR. We’ve had all three tell us that the preparation and subsequent discussions can be downright painful for four main reasons: we think they’re a chore, we’re stuck in a bad cycle, we artificially rank people, and we amplify shortcomings.

We think they’re a chore. “My manager emailed me our company’s performance review form,” our client Michelle told us.

“What kind of discussion did you have?” we asked.

“Discussion?” Michelle seemed perplexed. “Our ‘discussion’ consisted of a half a dozen words in an email: ‘Fill it out. I’ll sign it.’”
