SILVERLIGHT: USER INTERFACE DEVELOPMENT FRAMEWORK

Initially, Silverlight was introduced to the market as a development framework for web applications, to deliver media rich content, designed to run inside a web browser with the required plug-in installed.

Although Silverlight technology is still generally known as a development framework for web applications that runs within a browser, Silverlight version 3 and later support out-of-browser applications. As Silverlight evolves, this technology is being adopted to support other platforms, including Linux, Mac OS, the latest Windows Phone 7 mobile platform, and Windows Embedded Compact.

Whether you use Silverlight to develop an out-of-browser application for the Windows desktop PC, a web application that runs in a browser, an application for Windows Phone 7, or a Windows Embedded Compact application, Silverlight is a UI development framework that enables the designer and application developer to work together seamlessly, doing what they do best, to jointly create an exciting and visually compelling UI for the application.
