CONFIGURE VIRTUAL PC CONNECTIVITY

Although you can configure a Virtual PC to acquire an IP address dynamically from an attached DHCP server, when working with Windows Embedded Compact development using a standalone development station without access to DHCP, it’s best to configure the Virtual PC machine and the host computer to use static IP addresses to establish connectivity, using the loopback adapter.

Loopback Adapter

To configure the Virtual PC machine and host computer to establish connectivity using the loopback adapter with static IP addresses, you need to install the Microsoft loopback adapter driver to the host PC first, prior to configuring the VM to use the loopback adapter.

Install the Loopback Adapter on a Windows 7 Development Station

Work through the following steps to configure the loopback adapter for a Windows 7 development station:

1. From the Windows 7 desktop’s Start menu, execute the following command to launch the Device Manager:

mmc devmgmt.msc

2. After the Device Manager launches, click the Computer node. (This action is needed to access the Action menu in the next step.)

3. From the Device Manager Action menu, click Add Legacy Hardware to bring up the Add Hardware Wizard; then click Next to continue.

4. Select the Install the Hardware That I Manually Select from a List (Advanced) option, and click Next to continue.

5. From the Common Hardware Types selection list, select Network adapters, and click Next.
