There are multiple options to deploy an application for Compact 7 devices.

  • Deploy the application as an installable CAB file to install to a device, preconfigured with Compact 7 OS and required components to support an application installation packaged in CAB file format.
  • Deploy the application to the Compact 7 device’s local storage.
  • Deploy the application as part of the Compact 7 OS run-time image created for the device.
  • Deploy the application using a hybrid between the including portion of the application as part of the Compact 7 OS run-time image, and deploy part of the application to the device’s local storage.

Deploying an Application: CAB Installable Package

For a Compact 7 device created to serve a targeted industry and designed to deliver specific functions, it’s not likely to use the CAB installation package as an option to deploy the Compact 7 application.

To support a Compact 7 application installed from the CAB file installation package, the device must implement a Hive-based registry or some other method to persist configuration and application data when the device goes through a cold reboot or complete power reset, where the device loses power completely. Otherwise, the device reverts to the initial factory default state and cannot retain the application installed from a CAB file installation package.
