In addition to the host controller, an embedded development project often needs to integrate with different peripherals to capture input and detect or sense system and environment status. These peripherals are typically built with a small microcontroller that provides a simple function and interfaces to the host controller through a USB, an RS-232, an RS-485, an I2C, an SPI, or a parallel or GPIO interface.

This chapter talks about interfacing external peripherals, using Phidgets devices, to a Windows Embedded Compact 7 device to add additional functionality to the Compact 7 device.

This chapter goes through the exercises to develop a custom Compact 7 OS design, integrate the necessary driver components to support the additional peripherals to the OS design, develop an application to access the device, and package everything into a compiled OS run-time image to deploy to the target device.
