Silverlight has an interesting place in the Microsoft ecosystem. It provides the power of developing applications in a manner similar to Windows Forms yet with the deployment characteristics of a Web application. When it was introduced, that was a killer combination of features, and it looked like Silverlight would be around for years.

But that didn't turn out to be the case. Although Silverlight is not officially “dead,” there is not likely to be another release beyond the current Silverlight 5. There will be continued support for Silverlight in a number of browsers out to 2021, but there will be no new functionality added. Microsoft's official support position is that Silverlight 5 will support the browser versions listed on http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/locale/en-us/html/installation-win-SL5.html through October 21, 2021, or through the support lifecycle of the underlying browsers, whichever is shorter.

Perhaps most interestingly, the spirit of Silverlight lives on through XAML and Windows ...
