Records management is driven by regulatory compliance and the need to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, high availability, adherence to policy, and audit ability of information stored in official records. The central feature of any records management system is the records repository. The Office SharePoint Server 2007 records management features include a default implementation of a records repository in the form of the Records Center site template. This template provides all of the core functionality needed to build records management solutions through the OfficialFile web service and underlying object model.

Office SharePoint Server 2007 uses the OfficialFile web service to maintain a list of RecordRouting objects, which specify the locations within a repository that can accept records of a given type. By implementing the Official File web service contract, any system can participate in the Office SharePoint Server 2007 records management scheme.

Office SharePoint Server 2007 employs an extensible routing framework to process files that are submitted to a Records Center site. Once a router has been associated with a RecordRouting object, its SubmitFile method is called whenever a file is submitted to the site, enabling the router to process the file contents and its metadata. Custom routers are deployed using the SharePoint object model.
