Chapter 11. Managing Reports

Once a collection of reports and other content is out there on a SharePoint site, it will need to be managed. One thing that is often misunderstood is the difference between content and report server administration management. A Reporting Services installation consists of several server side administration tasks at the farm level, which typically falls within the responsibilities of the farm administration role.

On the other hand, site collection administrators and content managers can perform various tasks to control access to reports and data sources, automate report generation, and create historical archives. All these items can be managed independently of each other through a series of interfaces installed by Reporting Services Add-in for SharePoint. To manage items effectively, you need to know which tasks site collection administrators and content managers perform and where they should apply such settings.

The Reporting Services management story in SharePoint integrated mode revolves around the following topics, which will be covered throughout this chapter.

  • Client tools for management

  • Scalability planning

  • Managing data sources

  • Demystifying unattended report-processing account

  • Understanding on-demand report execution

  • Report-processing options

  • Static and data-driven subscriptions
