8.6. Summary

This chapter focused on using SharePoint's web content management facilities to build publishing pages. The combination of Master Page and page layout is used to build the layout of the final publishing page, which a content author uses to create and present content. SharePoint Designer and the browser are used to create these components.

The main takeaways from this chapter are:

  • The addition of Content Management Server 2002 to SharePoint Products and Technologies has created a robust content management solution.

  • Publishing sites provide web content management features in SharePoint.

  • Master Pages can be created using SharePoint Designer. A default and a Custom Master Page can be declared for each site.

  • Page layouts, also created using SharePoint Designer, display the body elements of a page such as field controls and Web Parts.

  • Publishing pages are created by content authors and are always based on an existing page layout.
