7.2. SharePoint's Themes

In the SharePoint 2003 world, there was a set of Themes available as part of FrontPage 2003, and another set of Themes that resided on the SharePoint web server. With the demise of FrontPage 2003, the Themes that came with it are gone. There are no Themes available as part of SharePoint Designer.

FrontPage Themes were implemented through the FrontPage Server Extensions, which Microsoft no longer actively develops. Some interesting posts on life after FrontPage Server Extensions can be found on this blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/robert_mcmurray/archive/2008/04/17/life-after-fpse-part-1.aspx.

The Themes that reside on the SharePoint front-end web servers are the only ones that now come with SharePoint. Any user with designer rights or above can apply Themes to a SharePoint site by navigating to Site Settings Site Theme (under the Look and Feel section), as shown in Figure 7-2.

On the Site Theme page, any of the 18 SharePoint Themes (including the Default Theme) can be applied to the site. Select a Theme from the list on the right and see a preview of it on the left (see Figure 7-3).
