ABOUT THE TECHNICAL EDITORS

CARL GRIMM heads enterprise strategy at New Idea Engineering where he focuses on best-of-breed, novel, and emerging technologies related to information retrieval. His interests include the application of machine learning and collaborative filtering as an alternative to term frequency-inverse document frequency–based relevancy systems. Prior to NIE, Carl specialized in user experience design as the Creative Director of Interactive Media at Firebelly. He has also held senior management positions in the Enterprise Search and financial services sector. A graduate of Miami University, Carl holds his Bachelors of Science in Business Administration.

JOHN T. KANE is currently working with Microsoft's NextGen and Incubation team and as a Search Consultant on a search-related project. He has over 20 years in Information Technology, working at everything from Fortune 100 corporations to small startup companies with emerging technologies. He has a passion for structured (SQL Server and relational databases), unstructured (FAST ESP and search engines), and social media (social search and collaboration) technologies and believes that unifying these diverse disciplines will provide businesses and customers with the best of these worlds, such as described in this book.
