Installable Tools

In addition to built-in tools that enhance IIS 8.0 troubleshooting, there are some other Microsoft and third-party installable tools that should be a part of your toolkit. All these are production server-ready and can either be manually installed or have a well-tested installer. Some will require IIS to be reset so that they can listen to the active traffic. Just be sure that you understand each of the additional tools that you decide to install.

WFetch

WFetch is a simple but powerful tool to listen to all web traffic and see everything included in the communication between IIS and the web client, including the request, response, headers, body, content length, status codes, and more (see Figure 23.28). It is excellent for troubleshooting the actual web traffic between a web browser and the IIS server, because it allows you to see the entire conversation between the two sides.

Web Capacity Analysis Tool

Web Capacity Analysis Tool (WCAT) is a command-line tool that can be controlled using configuration files or from the command line directly. The output can be saved to a .log file or to an .xml file. There is a wealth of flexibility to create almost any type of test. This tool allows you to stress-test a website to know how it will perform under load, by simulating a large number of visitors to the website.
