Application Administration

The configuration store used by IIS 8.0 is similar to what is used by the .NET Framework, allowing the server or site to have a tighter integration between IIS 8.0 and the .NET Framework technologies such as ASP.NET. As mentioned in Chapter 5, “Administration Tools,” the configuration is kept in the applicationHost.config, machine.config, and various web.config files. Owing to tight integration between IIS 8.0 and ASP.NET, the other non-ASP.NET content types now have access to the features of ASP.NET; for example, non-ASP.NET content can use ASP.NET Forms-based authentication (FBA). The “ASP.NET Configuration” section covers some of the shared aspects of ASP.NET. The next section covers ASP as a quick overview to show where ASP.NET came from.
