Automated Installation and Configuration

Many organizations need to install a large number of IIS 8.0 servers in diverse locations—a task not well suited for a single technician with a DVD, or even a herd of technicians. At some point, automated deployment becomes the only feasible method for creating and deploying these servers.

Previous Windows versions used Remote Installation Services, which has been updated to Windows Deployment Services (WDS). WDS is included in Windows Server 2012 as a deployment technology for both server and workstation operating systems. You can also script these deployments through PowerShell, as described earlier.

Windows Deployment Services

Windows Deployment Services (WDS) is designed to deploy Windows Server 20012 and Windows 8 across the enterprise, without the need to physically touch the system and without using the DVD at the new system. Using a network PXE boot, WDS can install a preconfigured Windows Server 20012 operating system with specific IIS 8.0 features and roles.

On the server side, WDS uses a Preboot eXecution Environment (PXE) and Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) to install an operating system on a client system with no functioning operating system. Boot images are created from an existing client, configured for your needs, and the resulting WDS installation has identical settings and configurations as the system from which the image was created.
