Chapter 9. Introduction to XML

Microsoft has gradually added features that enable Excel applications to work with XML. Saving a workbook as XML was introduced in Excel 2002, the ability to read and write arbitrary XML schemas was introduced in Excel 2003, and XML became the native file format in Excel 2007. This chapter introduces XML and explains the most common ways we might want to use it within our Excel applications. The use of XML to create custom Excel 2007 Ribbon user interfaces is covered in Chapter 10, “The Office 2007 Ribbon User Interface.”
