When applications first began to expose methodologies for automating themselves, each had its own proprietary programming or “macro” language. Some were at least fairly robust; some were all but abysmal. A programmer had to learn each separate language to manipulate each application. Finally, Microsoft introduced a true viable VBA, Visual Basic for Applications. This brought about not only a common programming language, but, equally as important, a common programming interface.
