11.1. What to Manage

BizTalk is made up of mulitple Microsoft components, depending on the installation and configuration options you choose. The components that can be used by BizTalk directly include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • BizTalk Server

  • Enterprise Single Sign-On (ESSO)

  • SQL Server

  • SQL Server Analysis Services

  • Internet Information Services

  • Windows SharePoint Services

  • SQL Notification Services

Figure 11-1 shows how the infrastructure for a typical BizTalk application may look.

As Figure 11-1 illustrates, a number of components are part of a BizTalk application. Each component has to be managed, maintained, and updated correctly. The chapter focuses primarily on the administration of BizTalk, although some of the tools and techniques do involve other components such as SQL Server.
