EVEN THOUGH PLM logically begins with the front of the life-cycle, it promises some of its greatest benefits in the later stages, after the product leaves the factory door. Without PLM, information about the product’s performance in use and its actual quality is lost to the detriment of other functional areas. In addition, product usability is a problem because of increased product complexity. Functions that are being mandated by regulation, such as recycling and reuse, become cost prohibitive without PLM or a PLM-like approach. This chapter will explore these opportunities and issues.
